In 2023, division hospitalists Dennis Chang, MD, Eileen Lee, MD, and Alex Thomas, MD organized the inaugural “Roads to Success” workshop with the goal of providing a comprehensive faculty development opportunity for hospitalists. After its initial success, Abby Spencer, MD, Professor and Vice Chair for Education and Director of the Academy of Educators, suggested a collaboration with the Department of Medicine to provide this course to clinical faculty educators across divisions on a semi-annual basis.
The 2025 iteration of the “Roads to Success” workshop featured an outstanding line-up of speakers who presented on important topics such as giving effective feedback to learners, creating a comfortable and inclusive learning environment, and improving clinical reasoning skills. The 1.5-day seminar focused on outlining four types of successes: career, teaching, wellness, and quality improvement/patient safety. View the full list of speakers.
I found the entire seminar very useful. I also liked that it was mostly junior faculty because it made me feel comfortable contributing to the discussion/dialogue. Also, a good networking opportunity.”
Participants were surveyed after the seminar to gather their feedback. One participant said, “I found the entire seminar very useful. I also liked that it was mostly junior faculty because it made me feel comfortable contributing to the discussion/dialogue. Also, a good networking opportunity.” Another stated, “I loved the practical tips for bedside teaching. I found the small group session highly effective. I really enjoyed the overview to teaching clinical reasoning and will incorporate this much more.” Others mentioned the benefits of being able to work one-on-one with the speakers in a small group setting, saying “I appreciated getting specific and tailored feedback, while seeing how others do their talks.”
Thank you to all who were involved in organizing this event, and to those who attended. The Division of Hospital Medicine is thankful to be involved in orchestrating this educational series, and we look forward to seeing its’ growth and development in future years.
