The WashU School of Medicine Academy of Educators is a collaborative group of educators dedicated to promoting a culture of educational excellence and cultivating a respected community of leaders in health science education. Directors include Abby Spencer, MD, Steve Taff, PhD, Leslie Blaylock, MEd, and Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine, Dennis Chang, MD. With Dr. Chang’s involvement in the Academy of Educators, as well as the Hospital Medicine Education committee, he provides ongoing support for education efforts across the Department of Medicine.
Several other hospitalists are also members of the Academy of Educators, including Eileen Lee, MD, and Martin Kerrigan, MD. The overlap of hospitalists in the Academy of Educators, and the Education committee allows for collaboration on larger events, such as the yearly Education Day. Since 2021, the Academy of Educators Education Day has provided an excellent opportunity to learn about a variety of educational topics through courses, abstract presentations, and breakout sessions.
Education committee leader Randy Laine, MD, elicited the support of the committee to promote the event, encouraging participation from the division, especially among new members. Eileen Lee, MD, also played a vital role in promoting and planning the 2024 Education Day, and Martin Kerrigan, MD, presented “Tips and Tricks to Improve your Written Assessment Comment” alongside Lisa Zickhur, MD in the first breakout session of the day. Hospitalist Tony Dao, MD, participated in the oral abstract presentations as well.
Overall, the collaboration between educators in the Department of Medicine allowed for a dynamic and insightful event. Thanks to everyone involved for their contributions, and congratulations on another successful iteration of the Education Day. We look forward to seeing how these efforts continue to expand and develop in coming years.
