Dr. Sonya Liu joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine as an Instructor in June of 2021. She was born in Arkansas prior to moving to St. Louis where she spent most of her childhood. Her family then moved to Pocatello, Idaho, which she now proudly calls home. She returned to Missouri to attend Washington University in St. Louis for her undergraduate education. She stayed in St. Louis for medical school and received her medical degree in 2018 from Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM).

During her time in medical school, she served as co-president of the Asian-Pacific American Medical Student Association WUSM chapter where she helped coordinate free public health screenings for the Asian community as well as organize performances for cultural celebrations such as Diwali and Lunar New Year for the WUSM community. She continued to indulge her musical interests by becoming co-music director of the WUSM Histones a cappella group, of which her favorite part was caroling throughout Siteman Cancer Center during the holiday season. Dr. Liu completed her internship and residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital / Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis prior to joining the Division in 2021. Her current areas of interest are general internal medicine with a focus on inpatient care and a special interest in infectious diseases. In her spare time, her current hobbies include binging TV shows, eating good food/desserts, spending time in Forest Park, playing board games, and completing puzzles.
