The WashU Med Supporting a Fair Environment (SAFE) Initiative was created for individuals to have an avenue to provide feedback about their experiences with educators. Individuals can submit ‘accolades’ for educators to report positive experiences in their learning environments. In October 2024, both Lyndon Lee, MD, and Rob Young, MD, received accolades detailing their hard work and dedication in creating inclusive, welcoming spaces for their students.
Dr. Lee’s student emphasized that he is an outstanding educator who demonstrates concern for student wellness. They also stated, “He was able to recognize and identify strengths in me as a student that I hadn’t even realized, which is a rare but important skill for a teacher or mentor and goes a long way in encouraging students.”
Dr. Lee spent a lot of thoughtful time dedicated to teaching while working together one night on night shift. He was not only an effective educator for the topic of our admitted patient, but also created a welcoming and safe learning environment.”
Dr. Young’s student reported his exemplary behavior as well, stating that he “facilitated excellent discussions during (our) health systems small group sessions” and “answered any and all of our questions with honesty and sincerity as well as stayed after class every time to talk with interested students, helping to put them in touch with ongoing research and additional online resources.” Additionally, they said, “he single-handedly made the concepts of quality improvement and incentivizing high value care much easier to understand.” The Division of Hospital Medicine is grateful to have such incredible mentors.
Dr. Young…gave us hope, alongside examples, that these systemic problems have potential solutions and that by working on solutions in our individual departments, our collective efforts will combine to affect positive change in healthcare.”
