Dr. Daniel Hunt Visits the Division

This Spring, our division was grateful to have Daniel P. Hunt, MD, MHM, FACP, as our Spring 2024 Visiting Professor. Dr. Hunt is the Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Prior to joining Emory in 2015, Dr. Hunt gained valuable professional experience through private practice of general internal medicine, academic internal medicine at a safety-net hospital, involvement in medical education, and leadership positions at renowned academic medical centers. He practiced general internal medicine in Houston and later became a partner at the Medical Clinic of Houston. Dr. Hunt was recruited by Baylor College of Medicine to serve as a clinician educator at Ben Taub General Hospital. In 2005, he was recruited by Massachusetts General Hospital to establish and lead the Inpatient Clinician Educator Service within the Department of Medicine. In 2010, Dr. Hunt assumed the position of Chief of the Hospital Medicine Unit at MGH, overseeing the Clinician Educator Service and the larger direct-care Hospital Medicine Group.

Currently, Dr. Hunt holds a leadership role in one of the largest academic hospital medicine divisions in the United States. The Emory Division of Hospital Medicine comprises 166 faculty members, 35 affiliated hospitalists, and 25 advanced practice providers who provide patient care across nine hospitals in Atlanta.

Dr. Hunt’s scholarly work primarily focuses on medical education, venous thromboembolism, perioperative management, and clinical problem solving. He has been recognized with numerous teaching awards, including the Baylor House Staff Teaching Award for consecutive years from 1997 to 2005. He has also received the Alfred Kranes Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching at MGH in 2006 and 2011, the Best Clinical Instructor Award from Harvard Medical School in 2008, the Society of Hospital Medicine Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2011, and a Golden Apple Teaching Award from the Emory Internal Medicine Residency Program in 2016.

During his visit, Dr. Hunt presented a lecture for the DHM Grand Rounds entitled, “How to Build a Culture of Clinical Scholarship.” He also presented a lecture for the DOM Grand Rounds, and Medicine CPC. In addition, he spoke at the 14th Annual Gateway Hospital Medicine Conference.
