Congratulations to Hospitalists Promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine

Congratulations to Crystal Atwood, MD, Safa Farrag, MD, and Eric Johnson, MD, on their promotions to Associate Professor of Medicine retroactive to July of 2025.

Crystal Atwood, MD, is highly experienced in multiple clinical service lines in Hospital Medicine, with expertise in managing complex inpatient care. As an active member of the QI and Patient Safety and Patient Care Operations committees, Crystal has been involved in numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing care transitions, patient throughput, and diagnostic testing processes. Additionally, she is the Director of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) for Hospital Medicine, and Core Faculty for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. As the Director of POCUS, Crystal leads the POCUS credentialing program for hospitalists and created the POCUS elective for residents.

Safa Farrag, MD, attends General Medicine Inpatient Teaching service (FIRM medicine), Consults service, and Hospitalist Direct Care. Safa is the Leader and Patient Safety Officer for the QI and Patient Safety Committee, where she implements Quality methodology and Safety tools to provide high value care and improve outcomes. Dr. Farrag has won several awards for her outstanding QI projects and her dedication to teaching and patient care. Safa also serves on the Patient Care Operations and Research Committees, where she contributes to developing operational guidelines for the division, and supporting research efforts of faculty members.

Eric Johnson, MD, manages inpatient care on the Hospitalist and Consult services, as well as overseeing the FIRM and Procedure services as an attending physician. His primary interests lie in medical student and resident education, with a focus on guiding and optimizing evidence-based patient care and refining clinical problem-solving skills. He regularly participates as a discussant at the weekly Clinicopathologic Conference (CPC), which emphasizes accurate medical diagnosis through a multidisciplinary approach, and he has received multiple Teacher of the Year awards. Additionally, he has contributed to three consecutive editions of The Washington Manual of Medical Therapeutics.
