Through the Supporting a Fair Environment (SAFE) initiative, individuals can report positive experiences in the learning environment. Dr. Marty Kerrigan and Dr. Kieran Patel both received Accolades for their contributions to a positive and inclusive environment for their students.
Dr. Kerrigan’s student emphasized that he treats others with dignity and respect and demonstrates concern for student and trainee wellness. He stated, “Dr. Kerrigan is one of the greatest mentors I’ve had in the clinical space and in life. He is genuinely interested in teaching students and residents and takes a lot of time out of his day to provide lessons and feedback based on progress…He also took almost one hour out of every day to provide tutoring to the medical students on the teaching team to explain concepts that were weak or help prepare for the boards/shelf exam.”
Dr. Patel’s student raved about their experiences with him as well. They said, “Over the last year and a half of my clinical time, there are few attendings I would say I enjoyed working with or learned as much with as Dr. Kieran Patel…He displayed a set of attending ideals that I rarely see and hope to strive for as an attending: a sense of humility and acknowledgement of areas of uncertainty…he repeatedly pushed myself (and himself) towards greater clinical mastery using a very simple framework that I will apply going forward: taking a small amount of time each day to synthesize/learn new things, finding a framework for organizing previously difficult topics concisely and in a way that makes sense to you and that makes management much simpler, compiling this information using a system that is easily accessible, and tracking interesting patients over time. He’s the BEST clinical teacher I’ve ever had.”
