Bob Mahoney, MD, an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor. Castle Connolly is a healthcare research and publishing company founded in 1991 to provide consumers with reliable information about the quality of healthcare providers. The “America’s Top Doctors” guidebook has been published annually since 1992, identifying physicians with outstanding clinical skills and contributions to the medical profession. Currently, candidates for Top Doctor are nominated through surveys of practicing US physicians. A research team conducts a thorough investigation of all nominees with respect to their educational background, training, board certification, hospital appointments, disciplinary history, and professional achievements. Those candidates who pass this initial review are then evaluated by specialized physician-led panels who evaluate each candidate’s qualifications, clinical expertise, and professional contributions, including publications, medical research, leadership, and participation in professional societies. Finally, a selection committee determines the final cohort of “Top Doctors” to be named for the year. In 2023, only 7% of US physicians received the “Top Doctor” distinction.
